  • It’s not that this isn’t an amazing true story of survival. It is. And I loved it for that. But it’s impossible not to know the outcome. Much of the tension is lost because of it. Still entirely worth the time to read, and I fully recommend. Let me just jump to the end and mention a wonderful thing I found here: In this book, I experienced an entire community come together for one man, as if he had been every person’s son, brother, or friend missing that day. In a way, he is. Talk about [...]

  • John Aldridge and his friend and business partner, Anthony Sosinski, own and operate a small commercial fishing boat. On July 24, 2013 they set out from Montauk, New York to check their fishing traps. At approximately three o’clock in the morning, while Sosinski slept, Aldridge accidentally slipped overboard. By the time Sosinski and another shipmate awoke, Aldridge had been missing for nearly four hours. A massive search and rescue operation began. The U.S. Coast Guard headquarters in New Hav [...]

  • This was quite a story. It was definitely fascinating to see how the rescuers used deductive reasoning to figure out where they should start in their search for Johnny. My favorite part was definitely seeing the situation from Johnny's point of view, which I actually wish we got more of. In addition, there were several sections that focused solely on rescue efforts and methodology, and while I liked learning about that, it seemed to break the flow of the story a bit.

  • On July 24, 2013, John Aldridge of Montauk, New York fell overboard from the back of the lobster boat, Anna Mary. His partner Anthony Sosinski and a crew member were asleep below. In the morning, they discovered Aldridge missing and called the Coast Guard. A large sea rescue search and rescue began.Part of the story is told by John Aldridge about his ordeal of survival. The other part of the story is told by Anthony Sosinski or third person narrator and covers the search and rescue. It was amazi [...]

  • What Used to Be Called a ‘Ripping Yarn’By Bill Marsano. Keenan Wynn was a noted character (active 1940s-1980s) and a motorcycle enthusiast, and in regard to the latter I once got from him a valuable piece of advice: “When you think you can ride it, sell it.” Which is one way of saying never take your skill for granted.” That is exactly John Aldridge where comes in. A long-time lobsterman with years of success and experience in his trade, he thought he knew what he was about when he gra [...]

  • It was interesting enough to hold my attention. I didn't care the way the narrative of the fisherman and the the rescue operations were shuffled back and forth. The writing was fair.

  • 4⭐️s from DH. How a fisherman survived without a life jacket in the frigid waters off the northeast coast until his rescue 12 hours later. Very lucky guy!

  • This was an amazing story of survival and rescue. I was drawn into this story right away and found this story fascinating, terrifying, and incredibly uplifting. This was told from many different perspectives and at times it was confusing, but really interesting to hear what all those people were going through while Johnny was overboard. This book gave me goose bumps and I even shed a few tears at the end when reading the different reactions to hearing Johnny was safely rescued. I cannot imagine [...]

  • This is much more than a story of survival and rescue, although clearly it is that. It is a life affirming story of the human spirit, never giving up, of thinking through decisions you make, of the loyalty and dedication of family and friends ,particularly boyhood friend and partner -'I never gave up'Anthony Sosinski, whose lives would have been negatively impacted forever if this had turned out differently-(thoughts of It's A Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart )-to the magnificent efforts of the [...]

  • Must read story of perseverance and survival. I really enjoyed this story. Being friends with Anthony Sosinski "Ski" as kids this story was especially moving. Regardless, it is amazing to see how the fishing community, USCG and John's family banded together is inspiring. Thank God this story has a happy ending. Please do yourself a favor and read this book. You will be glad you did.

  • Back in the day, when 8mm movie cameras came on the scene, it seemed every person who owned one wanted to gather their friends together in the living room to watch three-minutes-at-a-time movies (with no sound) of their last vacation of Aunt Bertha's 95th birthday party. Even as a kid, watching these movies of people I didn't know was sheer drudgery. I wondered then why anyone would want to watch someone else's home movies. I still do.Reading A Speck in the Sea: A Story of Survival and Rescue is [...]

  • Incredible story of survival and rescue, and the emotional aftermath.First, I just want to give huge props to Anthony for finding his daughters, fighting for them, and raising two beautiful daughters. Also, for figuring out the time Johnny went overboard, and helping the fleet organize the search. Johnny, While you're not the best writer I've ever read you still did a great job in writing your story. You really kept your mind engaged to survive. I'm impressed with your use of your boots, and the [...]

  • John Aldridge and Anthony Sosinski are partner owners of a fishing boat which is how they make their living. On July 24, 2013 John was on the overnight watch while Anthony and another crew member slept below deck. John needed to calibrate a new refrigeration system they on the boat to keep their catch alive. Rather than wake one of the other guys to help him, he decided to do it on his own. While trying to move to coolers with a long-handled box hook the plastic handle on one of the coolers snap [...]

  • This was a bit better than OK, but I found myself skimming a lot. Evidently it was expanded from a newspaper story (or magazine? It WAS big news for a while in the area) and I think it was really better suited to be a newspaper story. Compared to UNBROKEN, spending 12 hours in the water, even without a raft, it wasn't such a much. The Coast Guard was searching for him almost the minute he was found to be missing (now there's an odd turn of words) and it was interesting to read about their search [...]

  • I thought this was an interesting read. If nothing else, it was a fast read. Yet, I found that I wanted more. There was a lot of focus of the story spent on the numerous search and rescue efforts. What I was hoping for was that equal amounts of focus was spent on John's point of view as he was awaiting rescue. Although, I did find it interesting and could see how it was an easy mistake on the original search area as John was supposed to wake up Anthony for the next watch. Therefore, with John fa [...]

  • Since John Aldridge, the fisherman who was lost overboard at night while the rest of the crew slept, is one of the authors, and since the book is titled A Story of Survival and Rescue, we know the eventual outcome before we even start reading. So obviously there can't be any drama or suspense, right? Wrong. The narrative of John's struggle in the sea, his partner Anthony's attempt to determine when during the long night John disappeared, the Coast Guard's massive search aided by the rest of the [...]

  • A fascinating survival story, from the very beginning I was immersed in both John and Anthony's stories. I knew of course he would survive, but how? He fell into the ocean with almost nothing around him, except his own boots and a vague sense of which direction another fishing boat had left its buoys. I was utterly amazed at his persistence and will to survive. All while John is lost at sea, we are introduced to members of his family and his friend network and how his disappearance affects them. [...]

  • A well-written memoir from John Aldridge, describing his rescue after falling overboard from his fishing boat in the North Atlantic. Johnny was the only one awake on the boat at the time, and it was hours before he was discovered. The story alternates between Johnny's first-person recounting of his time in the water (which is OK) and the efforts of the Coast Guard and fishing community to rescue him (which is really good). The sense of community and the descriptions of the fishing culture on the [...]

  • A fisherman falls off his boat in the middle of night and his partner doesn't find out until 6 a.m. when he wakes up. The true story happened in 2013 and the story is told in chapters by John Aldridge in the water striving to stay alive. He knows that he will be found. But, will he be alive or dead? Chapters are written by his partner, Anthony Sosinski, who is horrified that his friend is alone in the Atlantic and is handling the rescue efforts with the Coast Guard and members of the commercial [...]

  • This may not be a five star story for most, but it is my favorite type of book to read. A true story of a team of fishermen who have grown up together and fish off of their boat, in the waters off Montauk, NY. When one of them falls overboard, and it is not discovered until many hours later, the story begins. New Haven's outstanding Coast Guard team also plays a large role in the story. An added bonus was when a few of us got to meet John and Anthony at our local bookstore. A great story and a g [...]

  • Wow!!! Overboard at 3:00 a.m. with the crew asleep below. What a book on courage, fortitude, positive attitude and goals ruled by the worth of love. It is about how one soul effects a fishing community and the savvy and effective Coast Guard. Truly, smarts, God's grace and luck all played a part is the saving of his life. He stayed clear in thought and I think that played the largest part in saving his own life.

  • I found this true story of survival absolutely captivating. The story is told from various perspectives: Johnny's incredible firsthand experience of what he did to survive, his partner, family and friends and how they barely dared to hope that he would be found alive and the US Coast Guard and the fishing community volunteers who explain how they planed and handled the search. A heartwarming story of a caring community and a miraculous outcome.

  • This book exceeded my expectations! Listened to the audio book version and it was great, and fast paced. The book starts out with the story of how fishing boat captain John Aldridge fell off his fishing vessel with virtually nothing with him. And the book explains the efforts to find him and how he managed to survive. The story is well written and compelling to listen to.

  • I received a review copy of this book and my husband grabbed it first. He really enjoyed this non-fiction account of lobstermen lost at sea and the ensuing race against time to find them. Some seemed like fluff (lots of "will they die?" "will they be rescued in time?") but interesting details on the rescue effort and how these things work.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed reading this true story of survival and rescue. I found the detail regarding the Coast Guard's technical rescue strategy very interesting. I felt the emotions of the people involved - the survivor, the rescuers and the family and friends. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy true outdoor adventure stories of survival against the odds.

  • This is the story of a fisherman who fell off the back of his lobster boat and managed to stay alive until he was rescued about 12 hours later. The whole story is good, and his rendition of what he was thinking and doing in order to survive is really fascinating. If you like survival against all odds stories, this is a good one.

  • Fascinating readGripping story when not lost in the background. The reason for 4 stars. Really educates about the assets and abilities of the coast guard and their most recent capabilities in search and rescue. Great story about Americans coming together in a time of need. Nice to read about selflessness in today's world

  • This was a fascinating book and grabbed you from the moment John Aldridge was tossed overboard. It was absolutely terrifying to think of nothing between your body and the ocean. No life jacket, no clothes, nothing. My stomach was in my throat for most of the book. I can't wait to see the movie. That Aldridge survived this is nothing short of a miracle.

  • While reading 'A Speak In the Sea', the subtitle 'A story of survival and rescue' gives away the inevitable ending as does the fact that those involved are also the authors. This doesn't take away from the pull of the narrative nor the immense emotion. Yeah, I had tears.A quick read that I very much recommend.
