  • **I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review**Too many YA books, focus more on the characters acting as mini adults and the storyline takes a backseat. I have heard more than one young adult complain that books geared for them focus too much on romance. Young adults are interested in more than romance. That is why I think books like High Summons are awesome. It's a great story of a new adult, Jon, struggling to balance his magic life with the rest of his life. As a college student, [...]

  • A magical fantasy adventure with a bit slower start, but accelerating over the pages and pulling the reader deeper into the story. Jon, a wizard’s son, is struggling to find a balance between his own life and the life influenced by magic – a life of a demon hunter. He is a college student, but not an ordinary one, since he has some strange abilities. He is trying hard, hungry for knowledge and understanding of the world, and improving his skills. One day he meets Jordan at a bookstore and be [...]

  • High Summons is a debut young adult urban fantasy and takes place in Rochester, New York state.Jon is an eighteen year old student, he's always known he was different from others, he could do magic and he was a wizard's son, yet he drifted in life with no real purpose. One evening he meets Jordan in a strange book store and is introduced to the world of demon hunting. Jordan agrees that Jon can become his apprentice while he sets out to stop a large demon summoning. It's a steep learning curve fo [...]

  • Okay, this won me over in the end. The main guy is POC from a single mother household and the majority of the characters are POC too. It's unapologetically urban. Straightforward take on demons, but somehow it goes sideways and is way creepier than I thought. Jon (main guy) was a bit annoying at first. not a typical protag. Like Jordan from the start - cool, slightly explosive but in an action flick like RED and classic DIE HARD sort of way. Fav secondary was a tie between Tyson (also PoC (black [...]

  • High Summons by Eli Celata started slow but when it picked up I as to hang on for a wild trip. Jon is a college student who has some abilities. He goes to an off-beat bookstore and meets a teacher. Now fighting demons becomes his forte. I loved this book and look forward to see how Jon's training continues and to see if Jon gets to meet his father. I now want to keeping flashing bouncy balls on hand.

  • I love the tagline of this book: “Rogues, midterms, demons—just normal university problems.” This is a story about a guy named Jon who is half-magic and finds himself apprenticed to a demon-hunting wizard. It’s a pretty dark subject overall, yet entertaining with lots of battles and spells and grisly creatures. Although it’s not my favorite reading genre (I usually avoid stories about angels and demons, since the portrayal is often far from reality), I try to look at these stories simp [...]

  • "Sometimes you have to believe even when things don't seem real or rational. You just have to be determined sometimes to believe in the things worth believing in or else you'd go insane."Eli Celata serves up a fresh take on the everyday magical hero in HIGH SUMMONS. With a narrator who's easy to root for, characters who will make readers tremble and chuckle, and a pacing that drives at a suspenseful gait, fantasy readers will enjoy Ms. Celata's thrilling, dark world. Shadows beware! Readers, get [...]

  • Mixed oil and waterDisparate nurtures, with similarities of nature. An abandoned son hooks up with an abandoning father. Experience regards the abecedarian. Something from each, for each. Oh, yeah, and demons, lots of demons.

  • This was a fun read. I loved the portrayal of Jonathan, the son of a wizard who knows he can perform magic but finds himself without a purpose in his life, until he meets up with Jordan, who agrees to mentor him and takes him into the world of demon hunting. It's an interesting story that takes Jon and Jordan all over Rochester, in which they encounter magical folk all over the city, all while Jordan struggles with not having his father in his life and how he is supposed to relate his experience [...]
