Peak Season may be a mystery novel, but it is also a study in character building and exploring the unseen sides of public life.Setting is a key character here, and Widmer gives readers who visit Florida as tourists (or, even seasonal residents) a bit of a look "behind the curtain." CW is all set in her new life. She sells real estate now, after retiring from a life of law enforcement and is happy. Until one day her old life comes back to confront her and threatens everything her new life holds for her. A decent good guy-bad guy story. There are a lot of players in this one, and at times I got confused about who was who, but the pace was good and Widmer keeps you on your toes. The best element in this book--for me at least--was the strong sense of place. I haven't spent much time in Florida, but with all the references to driving/biking along the Tamiami Trail, I'll have some idea what to expect. Story is okay but characters feel derivative of Evanovhich's series with the tough heroine, multiple male (possibly romantic) characters, but with fewer hijinks. Narrator okay, but the range of accents seemed to be beyond her repertoire, and the voices were inconsistent. Love [...]

W. McCoy delivers, as she chases after the bad guys. Not a bad listen when trapped inside by an ice storm. I would like to see where this author would take the character in another novel.
