  • 2.5 starsErmmOk, let me start by saying that I love Kim Fielding. I loved Brute. She has a way of writing really simple, sweet, but BIG (physically and hearted) characters. Now, with that being said. This book wasodd. Ummm - I wasn't quite sure where she was going with the different angles of the story. I get that we have 2 very lonely men, each with their own "monsters", trying to make sense out of life. But, it just didn't flow for me. Aiden and Luka were likable enough as charactersI'd expect [...]

  • 3.5This is a simple story about an ex-con, Aiden, re-integrating himself into society after being released from prison. He's the night shift janitor at a hotel and lives a very quiet life. He has a parole officer who really believes he can makes positive changes in his life and she pushes him to improve himself. He meets and begins a torrid affair with the new hotel security guard, Luka, who is a bit of an enigma. There are a few hints along the way as to what he actually is, so the reveal didn' [...]

  • 3.75*Aiden, dear Aiden, in and out of prison most of his life, no one has ever believed in him, he certainly doesn't believe in himself, he is fighting his alcohol addiction daily, working as a night custodian. This quote sort of sums him up at the beginning of the story: “There was something wrong with a job if the high points involved cleaning up vomit.”But, his parol officer believes in him and that is enough for Aiden to start thinking that maybe, maybe he can make it.Luka is the new nig [...]

  • Wait! What!!That was it? Where are the next twenty chapters? I want more Aiden! What an adorable characterNot to forget the book club, the wonderful Ms. Simmons, the Homer reciting Luka - the story is not finished, no way!One star less for letting me down there!

  • 3.5 stars. Nice little vampire tale about ex-con Aiden struggling to find purpose and avoid temptation as a free man. He has been a loner all his life and his parole officer is giving him tasks with a view to filling his life with relationships and meaning. He meets the intense and beautiful night security guard, Luka, who seems to be very attracted to him.I would read a parking ticket if it had the word vampire on it. But strangely in this novella it was the portrayal of human Aiden that really [...]

  • I really like Kim Fieldings style because she manages takes a genre that in my opinion can be terribly samey and done to death Paranormal m/m and put a fresh spin on it. Her other book that I read was ' Good Bones' a werewolf tale that I also found fresh and new! I don't for one minute think that anyone who reads this won't guess the true nature of Luka the security guard (who I personally loved to bits ) but at the same time the twist she puts on the usual lore surrounding his kind is differen [...]

  • I postponed this for awhile because I wasn't too impressed with the early BJs between Aiden and Luka. Thought this would be one of those that had more sex scenes than plot. It was an okay story for me -- not my favorite from Ms. Fielding. On one hand, I really liked Aiden and his struggle to find his self worth. I am a sucker for this kind of story. Aiden thought that he was just an ex-con, all he wanted was to keep his night shift job and not fell into the seduction of alcohol. I loved Aiden's [...]

  • I'm so glad I didn't find out Luka was before I decided to read this book. I really like this book, but if I had known I would have had to be dragged kicking and screaming into reading this book. Not that I didn’t like the author a lot, I just really don’t usually like books with that sort of creature in them.I really liked Aiden, and appreciate that the author didn't treat him like a brainless thug, or a helpless victim. He may have had a rough beginning, he might have made bad choices, but [...]

  • I preorder this book and of course read it immediately when it was available.Probably my 2 stars is the result of so much expectation Aiden, ex convicted trying very hard to don't fuck up and go to jail again. He want, badly, to have a job, resist his alcohol dependence and finally start his live. In his job he will know the irrestible security guy, Luka And things will (almost boring) go on in a predicted way. It's not my first book from this writer. I read and liked (a lot):Stasis, Flux, Equipo [...]

  • 4 StarsI could have done without the paranormal aspect entirely because OMG the rest was so powerful. I'm a HYOOOGE proponent of automatically restoring voting rights to felons but I'm also frustrated by the whole system in general making it so, so hard for those who've done their time to turn their lives around without significant help. (Help that is continually eroded from governmental budgets , leaving the services to be filled by religious institutions.) This book does such a damned good job [...]

  • 4 HeartsReview written for MM Good Book Reviewsmmgoodbookreviews.wordpress/I was very excited reading this book and it was absolutely fascinating. The whole idea was so invigorating it made it quite a joy for me to read; in the end though I wavered between three or four hearts. This book starts with a powerful kick; a troubled ex-con trying to make it in a world where there aren’t many opportunities for him left. A bit his circumstances in life, a bit the wrong choices, a bit the fact that ther [...]

  • This was okay, a nice little read, but lacked a certain depth. I didn't feel a ton of chemistry between our MC's, or understand the deeper emotions that developed since we didn't see them have any deeper conversations. Despite us learning (through infrequent and vague allusions) that Aiden spent his youth on the streets, hooking when necessary, and in and out of jail with at least one rape, none of that ever comes up. I appreciate that Aiden doesn't cry 'victim' or let it drag him down, but if w [...]

  • 2.5*sigh*The premise is lovely. The execution is lazy. Simply using the word "monster" repetitively and hearkening back to the concept of internally harbouring such does not illustrate the idea of two men with monkeys on their backs/inner demons/undesired parts of themselves finding a way to prevail against the ugly inclinations of these and finding love. The story is largely tell and remains, ever so disappointingly, on the surface. Not much thought or exquisite emotion roused hereby despite the [...]

  • I absolutely loved that Aiden joined a book club. I love characters who break stereotypes and rough-and-tumble Aiden captured my heart pretty quickly.I inadvertently learned Luka's secret right after I started reading the book, so I wonder how long it would have taken me to figure it out on my own. But in any case, I enjoyed his character as well and loved that both men were able to show each other their vulnerabilities.Kim Fielding did a remarkable job pulling me into Aiden's surroundings. I ha [...]

  • May I suggest that if you want to enjoy this book, truly enjoy it, that you don't read the reviews first. Some reviewers have decided to throw Luka's secret out there with no hide spoilers. This ebook totally surprised me. I started out thinking I wasn't going to like it but somewhere, somehow these characters just grabbed me and I fell in love with them. Not having read any reviews it took me a while to figure out what Luka's secret was, at least I had that luxury, as it is pivotal to the readin [...]

  • This was a great short read. It was engaging and sexy with very likable characters. I keep getting these books with potential spoilers but I will do my best to review it spoiler free.Aiden is trying to put his life in order. He’s an ex-con with an addiction but he’s been given one last chance on the outside. His parole officer gets him a janitor job for a hotel. Aiden doesn’t mind the job and he’s kind of resigned to his place in life. His story is a sad one and Aiden hasn’t ever had a [...]

  • 3.75 I was skeptical going into this read, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the “why” Aiden spent time in prison. But as I was beginning to settle into the read, it drew me in and I must say it was surprisingly good. It was nothing like I was expecting, well; I must admit I had to reevaluate my thoughts and prejudice against ex-cons.Aiden had to battle his own personal demons, he understands that he paves his own path in life, and he is slowly but surely making all the right chooses fo [...]

  • I loved Aiden and was rooting for him the whole storyloved that he joined a book club and was able to get his life back on track after prison. And I loved Luka, nice surprise to see who he really is, but I absolutely enjoyed the two of them together. I definitely wouldn't mind reading more about these two!

  • Nice romance between an alcoholic ex-con, struggling to make his way in alcohol-free non-criminal life, and a vampire, overwhelmed at falling in love after all this time and not wanting to lose it. Thankfully, Aiden's challenges were not glossed over. We witness several meetings with his parole officer -- fabulous woman! -- and there's discussion of how he's technically breaking parole living where he does, but he can't afford any better and his PO knows this.Luka and Aiden's connection, while f [...]

  • I didn't tag this with what Luka is, although I feel like if you've read any PNR and look at the title of the book. (view spoiler)[He's a vampire. (hide spoiler)]I went through my library and borrowed every Kim Fielding book that was also fantasy and have enjoyed all of them.I actually really enjoyed this one, because I haven't read a story about a parolee getting back on his feet, and finding reasons to stay out of prison. Luka didn't hurt, and I loved that Aiden was a reader, too!I found this [...]

  • Short but very satisfying story about two oddball characters, one an ex-con and the other a security guard who only comes out at night.

  • I really liked this but I felt it ended too abruptly. A huge secret was revealed and then story wrapped up. It needed a bit more.

  • Aiden thinks he’s a “loser”. He’s an ex-con on parole ,working at a nothing job, his last chance before being sent back to prison for life. He’s got a GED but nothing else. No money, no friends, nothing much to do. Until he meets Luka.Luka is the new security guard at Aiden’s work and every night, during Aiden’s dinner break, Luka gives Aiden a BJ! He never seeks reciprocity and refuses to see Aiden in daylight hours. Sure they enjoy some lovely conversation as well, but most of th [...]
