    About " Georgette Heyer "

  • Georgette Heyer

Georgette Heyer was a prolific historical romance and detective fiction novelist Her writing career began in 1921, when she turned a story for her younger brother into the novel The Black Moth.In 1925 she married George Ronald Rougier, a mining engineer, and he often provided basic plot outlines for her thrillers Beginning in 1932, Heyer released one romance novel and one thriller each year.Heyer was an intensely private person who remained a best selling author all her life without the aid of publicity She made no appearances, never gave an interview and only answered fan letters herself if they made an interesting historical point She sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Stella Martin. Her Regencies were inspired by Jane Austen, but unlike Austen, who wrote about and for the times in which she lived, Heyer was forced to include copious information about the period so that her readers would understand the setting While some critics thought her novels were too detailed, others considered the level of detail to be Heyer s greatest asset.Heyer remains a popular and much loved author, known for essentially establishing the historical romance genre and its subgenre Regency romance.

  • I am reading these mysteries on kindle. I have read two and find them delightful! Her characters are sparkling and interestingI underline her descriptions of each character they are so well drawn. She is humorous, dryly romantic in a sort of Darcy/British restrained way, her settings much like Agatha ChristieEnglish country houses for a weekend guests plus a murder= entertaining and very hard to untangle the mystery. Love, love them. I plan to read them all!

  • As a teenager I loved Georgette Heyer's Regency romances, and I can't believe I never discovered her mystery novels until I was much older! Along the lines of Agatha Christie, written with wit and aplomb, exploring, I only wish someone would take these up and dramatise them for TV! Great fun1

  • Having for years adored her Regency Romances, I have often tried but failed to get into Georgett Heyer Detective stories. But I succeeded in reading one at last and have just finished "They Found Him Dead". I am surprised how awful it was. Characters are unconvincing whether bland or caricatures. Whodunnit, plot and the murderer were also unconvincing. Though pubiished originally in 1937, the period seemed distinctly and quaintly 1920's but I was amused to note that all the characters were smoke [...]

  • Loved the (now) period mysteries. Since they were written in the time, give a good look at like in those times & that level of society

  • With the exception of Penhallow (which is wretched), Heyer skewers the landed gentry very nicely indeed in her modern mystery novels.

  • While recovering from my recent illness I needed lots of light reading. So.I re-read many of the old mysteries I own! Georgette Heyer puts a lot of humor in her characters which makes it fun!
