Mika Toimi Waltari was a Finnish historical novelist, best known for his magnum opus The Egyptian.Waltari was born in Helsinki and lost his father, a Lutheran pastor, at the age of five As a boy, he witnessed the Finnish Civil War in Helsinki Later he enrolled in the University of Helsinki as a theology student, according to his mother s wishes, but soon abandoned theology in favour of philosophy, aesthetics and literature, graduating in 1929 While studying, he contributed to various magazines and wrote poetry and stories, getting his first book published in 1925 In 1927 he went to Paris where he wrote his first major novel Suuri illusioni The Grand Illusion , a story of bohemian life In terms of style, the novel is considered to be the Finnish equivalent to the works of the American writers of the Lost Generation In Waltari s historical novel The Adventurer, taking place in the 16th century, the hero is a Finn who goes to Paris during his twenties and lives there a rather bohemian life Waltari also was, for a while, a member of the liberal literary movement Tulenkantajat, though his political and social views later turned conservative He was married in 1931 and had a daughter, Satu, who also became a writer.Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Waltari worked hectically as a journalist and critic, writing for a number of newspapers and magazines and travelling widely in Europe He directed the magazine Suomen Kuvalehti At the same time, he kept writing books in many genres, moving easily from one literary field to another He had a very busy schedule and strict work ethic It has been claimed that he also suffered from insomnia and depression, sometimes to the extent of needing hospital treatment He participated, and often succeeded, in literary competitions to prove the quality of his work to critics One of these competitions gave rise to one of his most popular characters, Inspector Palmu, a gruff detective of the Helsinki police department, who starred in three mystery novels, all of which were filmed a fourth one was made without Waltari involved Waltari also scripted the popular cartoon Kieku ja Kaiku and wrote Aiotko kirjailijaksi, a guidebook for aspiring writers that influenced many younger writers such as Kalle P talo.During the Winter War 1939 1940 and the Continuation War 1941 1944 , Waltari worked in the government information center, now also placing his literary skills at the service of political propaganda 1945 saw the publication of Waltari s first and most successful historical novel, The Egyptian Its theme of the corruption of humanist values in a materialist world seemed curiously topical in the aftermath of World War II, and the book became an international bestseller, serving as the basis of the 1954 Hollywood movie of the same name Waltari wrote seven historical novels, placed in various ancient cultures, among which The Dark Angel, set during the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 is probably the best In these novels, he gave powerful expression to his fundamental pessimism and also, in two novels set in the Roman Empire, to his Christian conviction After the war, he also wrote several novellas, showing particular mastery in this genre He became a member of the Finnish Academy in 1957 and received an honorary doctorate at the University of Turku in 1970.Waltari was one of the most prolific Finnish writers He wrote at least 29 novels, 15 novellas, 6 collections of stories or fairy tales, 6 collections of poetry and 26 plays, as well as screenplays, radioplays, non fiction, translations, and hundreds of reviews and articles He is also the internationally best known Finnish writer, and his works have been translated into than 40 languages.

  • I had to read it 3 times in a row, it was that delightful. The romance is perfectly built, getting deep into the psychology of both genders and showing how tormenting (and why) a relationship can be. Besides, the best thing about it is that the love story is the territory in which the beliefs, the spirituality and the fate of the two characters are shown. It is simply connected to everything in the book. If you see it as separate, you miss on a lot. It could be weird for reader who are not famil [...]

  • What was lost and is gone forever. The novel purports to be the diary of one John Angelos, a mysterious half-Greek, half Latin participant in the final defence of Constantinople in 1453.The fall of Constantinople to the armies of Mehmet the Conqueror in May 1453 was a cataclysmic event. Yet it has always surprised me how few in the west responded to the Byzantine call for help. Mehmet's preparations were evident for a long time and the city was able to hold out for nearly two months. It is an ama [...]

  • I don't think its as good as some of his earlier books, but to my opinion it gives an excellent picture of the absolutely weird network of the different intersecting interests during Constantinople's last christian days (intersecting among the emperor, his prime minister, the muslims, the Genovese and the rest western soldiers etc etc.)This is the reason I consider it a very useful book for anyone interested to understand what really happend in Constantinople back in 1453.

  • The story started with a romance that I didn't like, but it evolved into a powerful relationship between two people facing their fate and imminent destruction. An empire totally betrayed by its "allies" trying to stand up and end in a heroic way is the core of this wonderful novel written by Mika Waltari. I think that Sinuhe was more powerful regarding words and scenes but the end of this novel reached the top in emotions. I am Greek, so it spoke to my heart and I felt the agony of the last Gree [...]

  • You know I really had to struggle through the first hundreds of pages as they felt so tedious. However, now that I have finished the book, I really feel that this was one of the best reading experiences I've had this year. Finally Waltari managed to grow more mature out of his war-provoked childishness in writing Sinuhe the Egyptian and especially Mikael El-Hakim. This time he even bothered to use a bit different main characters as seen in the aforementioned books. This is a historical novel at [...]

  • Written as a journal in the first person of a French mercenary soldier, Jean Ange [John Angelos], this was a vivid retelling of the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 -- preparation for the Siege, the Siege itself, and the aftermath. To my mind, the love interest took up too much of the story. This was all in all a fascinating glimpse into an often-neglected piece of history.

  • Sublime! I was reading this book at the same time as another shorter simpler book, and this went down much faster. Indeed the love story is the context in which everything is revealed; why else would the book open with their unforgettable first encounter?

  • Ihmisen matka elämän haasteiden läpi, etsien totuutta tästä elämästä ja tuonpuoleisesta. Johannes-parka.

  • An interesting historical novel that was unfortunately burdened with a toilsome romance. Well researched, though obviously tainted by a heavy reliance on Barbaro's chronicle, Waltari maintains his context and continuity well and, with one really exceptional case, does not step beyond the bounds of historical plausibility. His knowledge of various figures is impressive though I remain doubtful of many of his characterizations, the motivations he provides for people in his world make sense given h [...]

  • Almost masterpiece. Romance with the 2nd coming of Christ (yes, this men - lover here:) and historic-battle and "soul of the city (Konstantynopol, now Istanbul) novel background

  • Käsittämättömän hieno kirja kaikille 1400-1500-luvun Euroopan historiasta kiinnostuneille! Kirja on paikoin ultraväkivaltainen, ehdottomasti väkivaltaisimpia teoksia Waltarin laajassa historiallisten romaanien tuotannossa.Johannes Angelos osoittaa kerronnallaan Waltarin mittaamattoman laa [...]

  • Korkeiden ennakko-odotusten takia lukukokemuksesta tuli pieni pettymys.

Kirjan loppu on kuitenkin huikeaa Waltaria.

  • Takes place just before and during the Ottoman Empire's takeover of Constantinople. I learned a LOT about this era that my college courses never really touched on. As always, Waltari's main character is in the thick of battles, politics and more. But also as always, Waltari does a poor job of portraying women and there was a bit too much of the relationship aspect of the main character and his love interest.

Pakollinen historiallisten kirjojen rakastajalle. Tarinaa kerrotaan kutkuttavasti, lisäksi on lukeminen elämyksellistä myös kielellisesti. Lukijaa kummastutti, miten usein "elämäni rakkaus" ja "vihaa [...]
